Tri-State Biodiesel — Your Green Fuel Supplier

Biodiesel in The Bronx

Biofuels in the Bronx: CSE is engaged in research and collaborative industrial projects centered on biodiesel and lignocellulosic biofuels.  We work closely with TriState Biodiesel in Bronx, NY as well as Sandia National Laboratories and the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) in Emeryville, CA to test and research biofuels derived from urban and agricultural waste streams.

Fuel from Urban Waste:  New York City uses over 50 million gallons of cooking oil every year, of which approximately 20% is recaptured and 15% is converted into biodiesel fuel.  As part of PlaNYC, Mayor Bloomberg has mandated that biodiesel be blended into home heating oil for use in commercial and residential boilers.  We have obtained the first segment of funding towards our BQ-9000 lab for the ASTM certification of biodiesel and BioHeat.

Fuel from Agricultural and Forestry Waste:  In an ongoing collaboration with JBEI, we are researching methods to process biomass into next generation biofuels using green solvents known as ionic liquids.  We have demonstrated that the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, is extremely effective for processing softwood chips and forestry residues into a stream of purified cellulose that is amenable to enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequent fermentation to fuels and fine chemicals.
